Does FAQPage Schema Actually Increase AI Citation Rate

The question
FAQPage schema shows up in nearly every AEO checklist, usually without much evidence attached. I wanted a direct before-and-after test rather than relying on the general consensus.
How I tested it
I took 40 pages with existing FAQ-style content and split them into two matched groups of 20. I added FAQPage schema to one group and left the other untouched, keeping the visible content identical. I tracked AI citation rate across Google AI Overviews and the major LLM answer engines for eight weeks.
What I found
The schema group saw a real but modest lift in citation rate compared to the control group. It was noticeably smaller than the lift I measured from restructuring prose to put a direct answer near the top of the page in the AI Overview citation study.
Schema on its own, without genuine question-and-answer content behind it, did not seem to move the number much. It reads more like a confirmation signal than a primary driver.
What this means in practice
Add FAQPage schema where you already have real FAQ content. Don't expect it to compensate for weak or indirect answers in the prose itself. If you're deciding where to spend limited time, entity clarity in the prose is the other lever worth testing alongside this one.
Where this could be wrong
40 pages over 8 weeks is a reasonably tight test, but citation behavior across AI engines shifts over time, and I have not yet re-run this on a fresh page set to check whether the effect holds.
